Imagine going from a New Zealand university lecture hall to working alongside NASA engineers in California. That’s exactly what happened for six Kiwi students in 2024, thanks to the New Zealand Space Scholarship—a program that places top STEM students in paid internships at NASA’s world-leading research centres.
With 2025 applications now closed, all eyes are on what’s coming for 2026—and how the next wave of Kiwi students can land a place among the stars.
Six Kiwi Students. One Giant Leap.
Here’s a look at the 2024 interns who represented New Zealand on the global stage:
Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Pasadena
- Narottam Royal, University of Canterbury
Worked on NASA’s Deep Space Network to help track spacecraft orientation in deep space. - Tait Francis, University of Otago
Researched Titan’s atmosphere, studying how planetary chemistry works on distant moons. - Axl Rogers, Auckland University of Technology
Focused on space navigation via Delta DOR, supporting work at NZ’s Warkworth Space Centre. - Grace Jacobs Corban, Victoria University of Wellington
Helped create public outreach content for NASA’s Exoplanet Exploration Program.
NASA Ames Research Center, Silicon Valley
- Faun Watson, Victoria University of Wellington
Used shockwave simulations to help model satellite re-entry safety. - Alexandra McKendry, University of Canterbury
Worked on neuromorphic computing to improve decision-making in autonomous spacecraft.
These students didn’t just learn—they contributed to real missions alongside NASA scientists.
